How to Care for Your Flooring During the Summer

Modern kitchen with glossy white and black cabinets, wood floor, large window, and a pink orchid on the counter.

The summer months bring longer days, warmer weather and more time spent enjoying your home and garden. However, increased temperatures and sunshine can also affect your flooring if it's not properly cared for.

One of the biggest challenges is prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Over time, UV rays can cause carpets, wood, laminate and even some vinyl flooring to fade. Closing curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day, particularly in south-facing rooms, can help protect your flooring and preserve its original colour.

Natural materials such as wood and engineered wood flooring may also expand slightly in warmer conditions. This is perfectly normal, but maintaining a consistent indoor temperature and allowing flooring to acclimatise correctly during installation helps minimise seasonal movement.

Summer also means more trips in and out of the garden, bringing dust, grass, sand and small stones into the home. These tiny particles can act like sandpaper underfoot, gradually scratching hard flooring and becoming trapped in carpet fibres. Regular vacuuming and sweeping, combined with good quality entrance mats, will help keep your flooring in excellent condition.

If you're using paddling pools, hosting barbecues or returning from the beach, be mindful of wet feet and excess moisture. While many modern flooring products are highly water resistant, it's always best to wipe up spills and standing water quickly to avoid unnecessary damage.

Moving furniture to make space for gatherings or opening doors and windows more frequently can also increase wear. Using furniture pads and regularly cleaning your flooring with products recommended by the manufacturer will help maintain its appearance throughout the season.

With just a little extra care, your flooring can continue looking its best throughout the summer and beyond. If you're thinking about refreshing your home with new flooring, the team at Wirral Flooring & Carpets is always happy to help you choose a solution that's both stylish and built to cope with everyday family life.
