How to Protect Your Floors from Mud, Rain and Wet Shoes

Autumn brings plenty to love, from changing leaves to cosy evenings at home. Unfortunately, it also brings rain, muddy shoes and wet paws... none of which are particularly friendly to your flooring!

With a little preparation, however, you can keep your carpets and hard floors looking their best throughout autumn and into winter.

Start at the front door. A good-quality entrance mat is one of the simplest ways to protect your flooring, catching dirt, grit and moisture before it makes its way further into your home. If you have the space, having an outdoor mat followed by another just inside the entrance provides even more protection.

Creating a designated place for wet shoes and boots can also make a big difference. A shoe rack, boot tray or basket near the entrance encourages everyone to take their shoes off before walking through the house. This is particularly useful when children arrive home from school or after a muddy autumn walk!

Regular cleaning becomes even more important at this time of year. Small pieces of dirt and grit can scratch some hard flooring surfaces when they're repeatedly walked over, while mud can quickly become embedded in carpet fibres. Vacuuming, sweeping or using the appropriate cleaning method for your flooring will help prevent this build-up.

If spills or muddy footprints do happen, deal with them as soon as possible. For carpets, blot rather than scrub the affected area and always use a cleaning product that's suitable for your particular carpet. On hard flooring, avoid allowing standing water to remain on the surface and wipe up moisture promptly.

Pet owners may want to keep an old towel near the door too. A quick wipe of muddy paws after autumn walks can save a lot of cleaning later!

Most importantly, make sure you understand the care requirements of your individual flooring. Different materials respond differently to moisture and cleaning products, so following the manufacturer's recommendations will help keep your floors looking their best.
